Does calcium ascorbate contain citrus?? (tablet form of vitamin c??)?
-
Hi, I'm allergic to citrus and corn, and wanted to take some vitamin C tablets (since i figure i'm lacking with having no citrus ever!), I bought a brand, Swisse, but was unsure if they contained the ingredients I'm allergic to (mainly citrus!) It says its derived from "non acidic calcium ascorbate" and the ingredient list reads: Vitamin C (calcium ascorbate 1210.38mg) 1000mg and Co-Enzyme Q10 (ubidecarenone from Ultrasome co-enzyme Q10) 1mg So does anyone know if this would contain citrus at all? Thanks in advance :) oh & here is the item i bought description if it's any help: http://www.swisse.com/products/immunity-energy/swisse-ultiboost-super-c

Answer:
You should really avoid calcium ascorbate because it can cause lung problems in susceptible people. As to your question, it doesn't contain citrus (sometimes Acerola cherries are used, but it would say so on the label) but it can likely be derived from corn, and GMO corn at that! Here are some safe guidelines for you: Sodium Ascorbate Powder OR Ascorbic Acid (none of the other types - NO calcium ascorbate or other mineral ascorbates) Ascorbic Acid for those of you more alkaline (if you know your pH of your body - can test your saliva and urine and if above 6.4, use ascorbic acid) (PS Ascorbic Acid can also help to bring your pH down and make you less alkaline) Sodium Ascorbate for those of you who are more acidic (if you know your pH of your body - can test your saliva & urine and if below 6.4, use sodium ascorbate). Sodium ascorbate is buffered with Bicarb. Also if you have a hard time tolerating the Ascorbic Acid (stomach discomfort), use Sodium Ascorbate. (if you are EXTREMELY acidic - and many are - you probably won't even absorb Vitamin C until you become less acidic. You can make sodium ascorbate by mixing 1 tsp. of ascorbic acid crystals with 1/2 tsp. of baking soda.
