What is an ideal candidate for weight loss surgery?

I am a Teen concerned about my weight.. Can i get any kind of weight loss surgery?

  • Im 17 years old and weigh 215lbs- 5'7. Both my parents are over gravely over weight. Ive been trying to lose weight since I was in the 3rd grade(weighd 110lbs- grandma made me aware i was overweight). By the time i got into 6th grade, i weighd 180 and freaked out about my weight.I have done and stuck with many diets since 3rd grade, along with exercise, and have kept gaining weight. I have ran a mini marathon and trained for 10 months for it(at least 6 miles a day). I lap swam with my sis at the ymca for a year( i only ate salads and fruits and vegies). I keep gaining weight. My school makes students where uniforms... and i they make us tuck our shirts into our pants amd I HATE how my belly hangs over or my pants show my figure of my stomach(horrifying). So i ALWAYS where a sweater over my uniform shirt. I have to weigh a certain amount to fullfill my ambition of becoming a police officer.... Without my ambition im the walking dead... My face always get flushed or blood red when i run for longer than 2 minutes these days(get so dizzy). I have no mental dissorders & ive never ate bcause of feelings. Please dont tell me to go on a diet cause ive tried dieting up until today(still gain). And dont tell me to work out(still gain). Is there a weight loss surgery i can get? Any at all teen safe?

  • Answer:

Talk to your doctors and ask them if you could have hypothyroidism, pcos, insulin resistance, sleep apnea, cushings syndrome, metabolic syndrome, or any of the above.. any of those could be why you can't lose weight. I had weight loss surgery at 16 years old..some childrens hospitals actually do have a bariatric surgery program.. but its a lot to go through.. http://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/service/s/weight-loss/default/ learn more there. its one of the nations leaders in teen bariatric surgery.. its the hospiatl i went to. (: don't go straight to wls if you havent tried absolutely everything else though.. and make sure yoru doctors havent missed a medical condition that cuold be contributing to the weight gain.

you could have some type of disorder? not mentally of course but phisically. Have you asked the doctor about how you eat like a rabbit but still gain weight? I would definately not reccomend surgery as you are so young, however, if you really have tried dieting and are not an emotional eater ask your doctor about surgery if you are serious. I know two people who have done the lap band surgery. It is where they put a ring type object around the entrance to your stomach and it works by only allowing you to eat so much food. Seriously though, ask your doctor if your serious, they can reccomend the right thing for you.

There are certain types of disorders that do make it very difficult and sometimes impossible for people to lose weight. However, I do have a few suggestions because weight loss surgery is not recommended. 1) it is incredibly expensive and will not be covered by insurance because it is considered cosmetic surgery. 2) weight loss surgery requires you to maintain healthy habits afterwards and it doesn't sound as if you could do that because you are constantly gaining weight. So anyway, a few comments about your diet of just veggies. By just eating vegetables and fruits, etc. your body is not being provided with adequate calories. Your body needs a certain amount of calories every day to maintain it's metabolism. When you do not eat enough, your body's metabolism slows down so anything that you eat thereafter is stored in your body as fat for energy for your body to use. The reason that you get dizzy when you run is because you are overweight. You may have more extensive issues such as hypertension or clogged arteries because of your weight. I understand that you don't want to hear to go on a diet, but honestly that is the thing to do. A healthy one. Why don't you meet with your physician and speak with her honestly about your problems? Or possibly a nutritionist if your physician does not find any problems? All in all, do not get weight loss surgeries. Most surgeons will not even consider it for people unless they are incredibly obese and much older than you are. Also, do not try dietary supplements such as weight loss pills. They are not approved by the FDA and most are found out to be unsafe later on. Please think about this and good luck!

It is unlikely that you would be eligible for weight loss surgery such as lap band, gastric bypass or liposuction in view of your young age. Besides that you are only about 60 lbs overweight and most people who have such surgery are usually a lot more overweight than you are. As you probably have some medical condition that stops you losing weight perhaps a doctor can give you some relevant medication other than diet pills that have a very low success rate and are supposed to suppress your appetite.
