Does the human body absorb sunlight?

What nutrients can the body absorb from exposure to sunlight? Why is exposure to sunlight good for humans?

  • Know about Vitamin D synthesis. Heard it is possible to receive and store more energy from sunlight by keeping Omega 3 levels up in body. Want to document reasons why sunlight is good for the body to counter obsessive trend toward slathering on sun screen for fear of cancer. Read in Yahoo! article that oncologists say sunscreen itself is proving to be more carcinogenic than reasonable exposure to sun! Thanks in advance for response.

  • Answer:

The skin creates Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, and it does not have to be for long. I have read that 10 minutes in sunlight with a short sleeve shirt would allow your skin to produce all the vitamin D it needs for 2-3 days. You can even get Vitamin D poisoning if you get too much sunlight after not being in the sun for a long period of time, and then getting an hour or more of full body exposure. This is especially a problem for very light skinned persons, with little skin pigment (blue eyed people, especially.) Vitamin D is not the only vitamin your body needs, however. From your question, it seems you already know what you are talking about. Human body doesn´t get nutrients from exposure to sun light, but it does get started chemical reactions that help the body to assimilate nutrients better. There´s vitamin k involved. Also, people who don´t get any sunlight at all, have health issues.

Yep, what the previous person said. Vitamin D synthesis is spurred by sunlight. I think people who do not get sun are more sick not because of lack of sunlight, but rather do not get out due to sickness. Also being cooped up inside or in perpetual darkness can lead to circadian rhythm changes and depression.
