Should permanent side effects of prescription drugs be revealed?
-
The Internet is jam packed with stories of permanent side effects from powerful prescription drugs. The warnings appear to be inadequate to those suffering "unusual" side effects that occur in only 1% or 2% of the time. These can be permanent disabilities and the pharmacists does not warn you of these "unusual" risks. This is true for many drugs and to some extent vaccinations. We don't know how many cases go unreported because they cannot be attributed to the specific drug or vaccination. Even if this permanent disability affects merely 10,000 people out of 1,000,000 people, shouldn't these people be warned? If it's 'merely' 1,000 people affected, shouldn't they be warned of the risk before they take the drug or vaccination? Where does medical ethics come into play here? Does the FDA represent citizens or the drug companies?

Answer:
The implied issue here is of "informed consent". Are patients adequately warned? In most instances they get no warning at all unless they're motivated enough to read the drug package inserts or check for adverse effects on the web. It's a classic case of caveat emptor -- let the buyer beware. In the meantime the prescribing MD has his butt covered by following the "accepted protocol". Where does this leave the patient? Obviously the needs of the patient don't rate. Medical ethics fall into the same category as Western Civilization: Gandhi's famous retort is that "it would be a good idea". The FDA represents the interests of the medical industry. It's absolutely not a consumer protection outfit. Let's face it: people use conventional medicine because they don't know of anything else or have blind "faith" in it, not because they follow the current medical literature! On the other hand, demographic studies show that people who use complementary/alternative medicine are more highly educated and more likely to research their choice of medical modalities. The permanent "side" effects should be on a highly visible black box warning label just like they are on cigarette packages.

Yes, and they are. Known side effects are always disclosed. Haven't you ever read the patient information leaflet that comes with the drug? The data sheet for each drug is available online for all to see. Both the patient and health care workers are encouraged to report suspected side effects. Serious adverse reactions are more likely to be reported than minor reactions. Even if a very small proportion of people report the same side effect, it is listed as a possible reaction. "Stories" on the internet are uncorroborated anecdotes. The vast majority of people who take prescription drugs CORRECTLY do not experience serious adverse reactions. Just out of interest, since you posted this on the quack board; when do the alties ever disclose such information about their practices? Edit: thenoseknows said, " On the other hand, demographic studies show that people who use complementary/alternative medicine are more highly educated and more likely to research their choice of medical modalities." That is actually correct. But that don't make them right or mean alt.med works. There is a difference between being educated and being able to think logically and critically.

yes they should list all the side effects that go along with taking the drugs and vaccinations the FDA is out for them selves not the people like they should be !!!!!! it is better here than in some parts of the country !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

of course, but then people might wake up to the fact that drugs are killing them, stop buying them, and the dopers would be out of a vast amount of money.

Yeah ofcourse. I never knew they weren't, when you get a medicine here it comes with a document listing alot of side affects. Even if they alot of them would still be worth it, and if it wasn't, then were taking them assuming theyre nothing when they actually could be.
