What is the germ theory?

If one MD is a Germ theory denialist are they all?

  • MD Dr Patrick Quantem has a web page which has some very interesting controversial views: http://freespace.virgin.net/ahcare.qua/index6.html In the bar marked "medical" under "literature" look up "the origin of germs". No direct link I'm afraid. He has a view that is very different from the main stream medical profession. My conclusion is: Doctors are germ theory denialists. I have come to this conclusion because, a small group of UK based osteopaths belonging to an obscure association which most osteopaths had never even heard of subscribe to the same view. A few of our resident Skeptics who blog regularly make snide comments from time to time that "UK Osteopaths are germ theory denialists" referencing this obscure society to justify that statement. Below is a prime example. Just look at Rhianna's answer: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aq6UHrp3eg38KboSZhPpwnwgBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20120208100817AAUyXji I think its entirely fair.... Or is it? Is it fair to label all doctors or even most doctors _______ based on the views of a small minority? Is it fair to label all or most osteopaths because of the actions of a minority? Your thoughts please.

Cmon lighty...thats like saying all medical students are brainwashed zombies that have nothing better to do than come on yahoo and gripe and moan about alt med. We know there are actually people who are the future of medicine going to class and LEARNING what it means to actually help people. Heck I bet a few of them will even encourage their patients to seek help wherever they find it, in spite of their own shortcomings! Heck...maybe one of them will actually prove what we do works! HAHA You know, brother lighty, there are people out there that are bigots and racists. No matter how much you try to convince them that we are all people floating around on this rock called earth, they will continue to spew the same hatred and anger to fulfill their own agendas. I am however starting to think that the earth is not big enough to have enough room to house some of the egos around here. Scotty, beam me up! I have noticed lately, with the exception of very few, most of our resident skeppys do not actually answer questions on here to HELP. They simply comment on any question that goes against their limited and myopic vision. Wouldn't it be nice if they used their vast intellect to aid people on here when someone asks a question about let say dosing or overdosing? Or how about some poor kid who cant decide if he should smoke his weed or eat it or stick in in his bum! Does this mean that ALL people of science are only capable of being derogatory and anti-altmed? Nah....just today one of my elderly patients over 90 years old asked his doctor, who was trained at a very prestigious university and practices at one of the world foremost medical hospitals, if it was ok for him to be seeing a chiropractor. This man of science not only ok'd it, he encouraged it! GREAT SCOTT! He must be a rebel!!! Lets get him in the stocks and stone him!!! If he did it, then the few who dont endorse manual therapies must be an incredibly small sub-set of the population. Whew. I better go was my hands now before my next patient. Scamming all of these people out of their money has gotten my hands really germy. You know...im handling all that germ ridden cash and hording it like scrooge.

No, and neither did I say that. Again, you are misrepresenting me. I said that many appear to be germ theory denialists. And it seems to be more than "a few individuals" Lighty. The british school of Osteopathy seems to advocate some of his work too.

No - it is quite easy to find doctors who loudly criticise their colleagues who advocate such nonsense. As I see it, it is much harder (next to impossible) to find osteopaths who act just as harsh against their colleagues.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'germ-theory denialist', because doctors are far from it. Germ theory is the theory that germs cause disease, and doctors certainly believe in germ theory. This guy doesn't. (Frankly, I don't understand how people can come to these conclusions... that's certainly some create thinking, there.) As far as judging an individual based on a group--- I think you've hit the nail on the head. People are people, individuals, not a group. There are so many alt med practitioners who say completely idiotic and close-minded things (such as, in the extreme form, 'all conventional medicine is bad'), and there are so many doctors AND skeptics who say equally idiotic and closed-minded things (such as "no, that alt remedy definitely will not work, take this Synthroid instead"). Skeptics call alt med people conspiracy theorists, alt med people call skeptics idiots and puppets of Big Pharma and Sheeple. Both sides need to calm down and look at the actual science and what works and how we can make things better rather than defending our own views. In my research department, there's a Lyme's researcher who is bitter and scornful towards anyone who believes Lyme's is a chronic disease that is undetectable etc etc. On the other hand, there's another who doesn't believe in the more recent vaccines like Guardasil (he doesn't believe they've been around long enough for proper safety studies). Chris Kressler is a Chinese Med practitioner who seems to understand the science quite well, and changes his views as new evidence presents itself. Mercola seems to have elevated his views on conventional medicine to a religion, twisting studies to suit his views. THAT SAID, alt med people generally TEND not to even try to understand the science that dismisses many of their claims, and conventional doctors TEND to dismiss alt med theories. So the generalization can be useful if you don't have time to research, just DON'T JUDGE INDIVIDUALS.

Well considering I am not a Doctor, alot of this went completely over my head but the reason I answered this was I found it to be interesting. I dont label all MD's the same because of a few beliefs of others. Isn't this the reason for research, to find the origin and cures to many diseases?

The Germ Theory is not accepted by all schools of medicine. The theory is owned by Alopathy ( modern medicine).Ayurveda says all diseases are due to imbalance of vital forces called Vatha(air),Pitha(bile)Kapha ,Homoeopath say that what causes the disease ,if administered in low density it can cure disease.Reiki,Accupuncture ,Unani systems do not believe in Germ Theory. All these branches cure diseases. But really what is medicine? If any thing that cures is medicine. He who cures is the doctor.
