Vitamin B12? What's with it?
-
I, late 40s have been taking vitamin B12 1000mcg for 8 days now. I feel like a new person. I have for the past 7 years woken up as tired as when I go to sleep and had the general feeling of being physically beaten up.......now like a wonder I feel normal....no pain with energy to do things...why? What was with me or what is it with vITAMIN b12? nOTHING ELSE HAS GOTTEN BETTER IN MY LIFE SO IT IS NOT A PSYCHOLOGICAL HIGH.

Answer:
It's the B12. B12 is critical for systemic cellular energy metabolism. It is important for the health and vitality of all organ systems. Low B12 intake will inevitably lead to fatigue - the symptoms can mimic chronic fatigue syndrome, a severe feeling of lack of energy. There may also be mild discomfort. Extremely low B12 intake can even present with temporary psychiatric symptoms (until you take some B12!). Low B12 intake can even cause heart problems due to elevated levels of homocysteine that can build up in the body. Taking high dose B12 supplements is important because many people, especially as they get older, produce less "intrinsic factor" - an enzyme that absorbs B12 in the stomach.

You need to be careful with supplementation of B vitamins. Taking more of one will cause deficiencies in others...they should all be taken in equal amounts. Glad it's working for you, but try a B-Complex with equal amounts of all B vits

According to personal experience and my coincidentally handy "nutrition for dummies", Vitamin B12 produces healthy red blood cells in your body. It helps protect a fatty material that covers your nerves and enables you to transmit messages between your nerve endings. It's also the only vitamin to contain a mineral; cobalt. When you are deficiant in VB12, destruction of red blood cells causes nerve damage, neurological damage and psychiatric symptoms, along with damaging stomach lining. When I was a kid, my mother used to always say when I was grumpy and down "Did you take your B's??" They all help with your overall mood.

I take B-12 (liquid form) and Folic Acid. It does wonders for me. I'm glad to hear it's working for you also. I also take other natural supplements by Flora such as Liquid Calcium and Iron & Herbs. One should take other vitamins to balance out the system.

http://vitanetonline.com/forums/1/Thread/153 I take B complex in the morning for energy and focus. If I feel stressed or anxiety I take B 12 too. It is best to take a sublingual form. I also take magnesium to help me wake up better.

Because vitamin B12 is needed for the affective assimilation of iron ~ without it, no matter how much iron you ingest the iron will never be absorbed effectively and you would therefore suffer from iron deficiency anemia and display symptoms such as fatigue and exhaustion, dizzy spells and loss of balance, paleness of skin. It is a common mistake that people make that they are deficient in iron, when in actua fact they are deficient in B12 and this masks the symptoms of iron deficiency. As one other poster has already said, the B complex of vitamins works best synergistically (as a group) and should be taken as a whole complex ie ~ B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 an B12. Without enough B6 in your system B12 wouldn't be effectively absorbed either. Likewise with Calcium, if you are deficient in calcium you will never absorb your B12 and if you are deficient in Vitamin D Calcium will never be absorbed !! Ohhhhhh, what a wicked web !! Sooooo, if you are vegetarian or lactose intolerant take a Calcium supplement with vitamin D3 included in it to ensure effective absorption. The B complex of vitamins is a water soluble complex and as such our bodies can neither absorb or produce them. Therefore we need to ingest them on a daily basis or suffer from the consequences as you appeared to have been. B complex deficiency symptoms are quite vast and can include headaches and migraines, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and exhaustion, irritability and moodiness, excessive sweating, tingling and prickling and numbing sensations in the outer extremities, dry mouth, excessive urination, muscle cramps at night time, depression, insomnia and constipation and even chest pains and heart palpitations !! Pretty scary actually if you don't realise the vitamin factor ....... but now you do !! Congratulations for thinking for yourself. Vitamin B12 is essential for forming and regenerating red blood cells (thus preventing anemia), maintaining a healthy nervous system, to help break down the amino acid homocysteine thus lowering the risk of heart disease and to properly utilise fats, carbs and protein. Things that may rob you of your precious complex of B vitamins are alcohol, otc cold and flu medicines, caffeine, sodas and soft drinks, diuretics, the oral contraceptive, eoestrogen replacement, antidepressants, antiobiotics and ulcer medications. Wow,. thats amazing,. I remember some friend at Uni went on the Vitamin B Complex,. its meant to be good for girls / periods / mood swings,. or something,. anyways I did a quick search on the BBC website and found some interesting things about Vitamin B12,. you may have been suffering from a condition called Pernicious anaemia, the symptoms include; "tiredness, light-headedness, shortness of breath and heart palpitations" but what's odd if you read the link I've included is that it says you need an injection of the vitamin, that its not enough to take orally,. thats a little odd,. my suggestion, go see a doctor / nutritionist... =)
