How can I become a Doctor in Australia?

Can I still become a doctor in Australia?

  • I want to become a doctor (G.P.), but have made some bad choices in high school thus far, e.g. irrelevant subject choices (didn't choose Chemistry or Physics) and got a low HSC mark. Since these mistakes I finally decided on what I really want to do in life, but I don't know how to get to it. Is there a course I can take in TAFE or college to make up for my mark and get into University to study for a doctorate as an undergraduate?? Please help! Thank you in advance!

  • Answer:

The fact you didn't take the right subjects isn't too much of a problem. You could simply study the required subjects- chemistry is vital, and you will need biology and physics or math. In the UK, we have access courses. Maybe there is similar in OZ? Now, is it a case that you got a low mark for some reason (i.e. you were unwell or something), or is it a case that you simply can't achieve those grades? If it's the latter, you might have a problem. Medical schools are looking for academic excellence. If you can't hit the high grades, you will struggle at medical school. Speak to a careers adviser.
