How to heal a pinched nerve in my back?

Can chiropractor heal/fix my bulging disc and pinched nerve?

  • I have been experiencing lower back pain on the left side for several months, I had an MRI done and I have a bulging disc that is pinching the nerve. Can a chiropractor fix this, or do you recommend another doctor? Do inversion tables work?

  • Answer:

Many people find chiropractic manipulation helpful in treating a bulging disc so you can give it a try. Remember though that most bulging discs are caused by an imbalance in your core muscles (the muscles that support your spine) so it is important to strengthen these as well. This will help you heal faster and protect you from future injury. You should see a physical therapist who can show you which stretches are best for your injury. Also make sure to keep moving while you recover - too much sitting around will put unnecessary pressure on your disc! Check out the link below for more information. I hope this helps!

It can help but the body has to fix it. Disc bulges are notoriously slow to heal as they have a poor blood supply so the tissue turnover is slow. an inversion table will likely do you no harm and may provide a bit of relief with traction through the disc to take pressure off the bulge. In my experience what really helps is gentle oscilatory motion through the discs. I think this helps because it helps relax the muscles but also improves the fluid turnover through the discs which I suspect speeds up the healing process. Disc bulges normally take 3 months to 1 year to resolve with conservative treatment (manual therapy) but I have seen them turn around in as little as 6 weeks although this is most unusual. evidence says you are much more likely to recover quickly with some manual therapy intervention as opposed to doing nothing at all and just waiting for it to heal. The UK BEAM report had some of the best most comprehensive research.

Go for a consultation with a chiropractor and if possible take your MRI. I LOVE my chiropractor. Yes, inversion tables are helpful, I can't use them because they give me a sinus headache. However I know people who swear by them...even my chiropractor approves.
