"Calm" Magnesium w/ Calcium side effects?

Does anyone know what the side effects of taking calcium and magnesium?

  • Answer:

if you take calcium/magnesium in a 2/1 ratio and no more than 1000mg calcium/500mg magnesium the side effects are: you will rest better, you will feel better ps: potassium is the heart mineral, not calcium mentioned above. you are more likely to get kidney stones from too little calcium than too much. one of the jobs of the kidney is to conserve calcium, so if you do not take in enough the kidney will not release any

With excess calcium intake the body will have magnesium deficiency. Not so good for the nerve endings. But magnesium is good for controlling the calcium in the body. Most people don't need to take calcium and magnesium supplements. Its already in the food. With excess calcium, soft tissues starts leeching the excess calcium from the bones. Which is not good.

your heart uses calcium to keep up it's automaticity, so too much calcium can throw it off; giving you irregular hearbeats and such. also, it can deposit itself pretty much anywhere in your body. Edit: to the guy below; look up your facts. the heart uses sodium, potassium, and calcium

Everyone is so oversold on calcium- it's media hype, IMHO, and possibly stems from the dairy industry. Magnesium is SO incredibly important for over 300 functions, and most do not get enough. Do some research on Mg. BTW, calcium competes with mag for uptake, so take them seperately. I had an intracelllar magnesium deficiency that almost killed me, and also had calcium antagonism from taking too much of it for too long.

The reason why you are getting conflicting answers is that there is synthetic pharmacy sold calciums and there are whole food based calciums like Coral Calcium. Side affects from synthetic vitamins do happen, because they leach or cause your cells to cannabolize neighboring cells to make sense out of them. When calcium is in a whole food matrix, your body can get the magnesium and other brothers and sisters around that food matrix to utilize it properly by your cells. FYI - Did you know that a healthy serving of organic brocolli (four ounces) has more absorbable calcium conpaired to an 8 oz glass of milk? Milk has a formula to grow a calf into a 1 and a half ton animal and when we humans drink it... It leaches magnesium out of our bones to try and make sense out of the excess calcium. My kids were raised without milk and my neighbor kids have had at least one broken bone in their childhood. My children are almost grown and have no broken bones, healthy teeth, and are strong. You can google a list of plant foods that are loaded with calcium or if you wish to supplement, find a stabilized and standardized coral calcium.

Certain forms of magnesium can cause diarrhea. Coral calcium may have lead or other contaminants in it, so be very careful. Coral calcium has been hyped as a cure for all sorts of diseases, but it's possible that it could be toxic. Magnesium glycinate is good form that is less likely to cause loose stools and it is well aborbed. Calcium carbonate is not well absorbed and vitamin D is important for bone health. Calcium citrate or chelate in a balanced formula with vitamin D would be a good choice.

Too much calcium can form calcium plaque on your artery walls and clog them up like cholesterol. Too much magnesium can give you the runs. The optimum ratio of calcium to magnesium is 60 to 40 and that is the actual ratio in dolomite which is a carbonate of calcium and magnesium. If you get a large excess of either calcium or magnesium then the one in large excess will be preferentially absorbed at the expense of the other one and you will actually end up deficient in the other one as calcium and magnesium interact. They are similar metals and belong to the group known as alkaline earth metals.
