How can I eat when I am disgusted by food?

Am I the only one who gets annoyed by somebody sniffing their food?!?

  • This drives me absolutely crazy!!! When I say sniffing, I don't mean opening a pot of soup or opening an oven of brownies and enjoying the aroma. I mean, somebody who takes their fork/spoon (with food on it) and brings it to their nose to smell it before they eat it. But it's purely out of suspicion or the fact that they already have this preconceived notion that the food is going to be bad and they want to sniff it to confirm this idea (you can tell by the disgusted face they make while bringing the fork to their pudgy little noses). Not only do I think its incredibly rude (to the chef/host) it's also very close minded (as it normally happens with unfamiliar culture's cuisine). Does this drive anybody else crazy and annoy the living hell out of them? If I go out to eat with another person who does this, I will probably go hulk mode. I think I'm done with my rant, haha.

I have only encountered this one time and it made me want to kill that girl. Short story, I cooked a low country boil with fresh caught shirmp (friends and I were renting a beach house on the coast). My friend's annyoing girlfriend at the time (They broke up thank god!) gets a plate and starts picking up the cooked shirmp and sniffing them. She says to me "do you think this shrimp is ok to eat?" It had to have been the freshest most delicious shrimp I have ever had in my life. I mean it was literally wild caught and swimming around in the ocean a very short time ago! I told her as much. She ate it. Pretended to have a stomach ache the rest of the night. 10 other people ate this same thing and felt fine. What a betch. So, yeah I guess I do get annoyed by that!

What bothers me, is when they try to sniff my food!

Yes, it totally drives me up the wall! I can't stand people playing with their food - just take it from the plate, and eat it! As you say, it is very rude. I used to live with a girl who played with her food, if there was shared food on the table she would play with it (stirring a bowl or parmesan, riffling through salads etc.), her own food would do laps around the plate, and she would sniff everything! It took so much self control to not snatch the fork out of her hands! In your own company you can do what you want, but acting like that in front of others, especially when someone else has made the meal for you, is just rude.

I sniff my food. It's not because I suspect the food will be bad. It's just a compulsive act. Also, when I smell something it tells me if the food will be sweet/salty/tangy/bitter. Nobody wants to bite into something expecting it to be one flavor but it turns out it's something else. The food sniffing is an inherited thing for me.
