What is the tip for weekly housekeeping at a hotel?

When and how much should you tip your hotel's housekeeping staff?

too late, if the maid changes between days you are tipping the wrong person

that is a considerate amount! $5 will do just fine. however if they are really nice to you then at the end of your stay you can give her that generous amount.

What is this tipping the hotel housekeeping staff that you speak of? Perhaps you stay at top quality hotels. Last time I stayed at a hotel, there was an empty beer can on the counter, the empty box was in the trashcan and a dirty towel was in the sink.
