Graduation pins for the gown?

Hello, My school gave me some graduation pins, and I assume they go on the gown, but it was never explained whether or not we put these on our gowns or not. Is putting pins and medals on a graduation gown common? Where normally are pins and medals placed on a graduation gown?

on the upper chest area where one would pin a medal - or it could be for the people who graduate with honors and have the extra sash that goes around the neck
