How should I say this in a resume?

What should I say when I drop off my resume, thanks?

  • I am applying for a internship but I want to know what their department (civil engineering) is dealing with and what area they need help in because I am taking construction engineering and GIS (related to geography and civil) for elective outside of my construction management degree. I want to personally drop of my resume and get an idea of what they are looking for and apply online. I am afraid that when I send in my transcript that it is low (3.02) and I don't have a chance except that the internship said, "Construction management, engineering, or related major can apply".

  • Answer:

It's better to not drop in unexpected. You don't know if they'll be busy. Call ahead and ask the receptionist if you can talk to someone about the opportunity. "My name is Sugar McBelle and I'm calling about the internship. I'd like to learn more about it. May I speak with whoever is organizing the opportunity?" If the receptionist knows about it, you can pick her brain. If not, she'll connect you with the person in charge. You can ask him or her some more questions over the phone, or find out if you can set up an informational interview. "I'm Biggie Strongman. I heard about your internship (from my advisor/on the internet/in an email from my department head) and wanted to find out if it would be a good match for me. Can you tell me a bit more about it? What skill set and background are you looking for? I'm majoring in construction management and taking classes in construction engineering and GIS for my electives this term."
