What is The First Job Above Manager At A Restaurant?

How to ask for letter of recommendation from boss (first job, high school student)?

  • In the spring of my senior year of high school I got my first job at a Subway restaurant. I have worked there for 5 months, and now I must leave to go off to college. I want to build a good resume for future employment opportunities. I am a shy person, and I am afraid and unsure of how to ask for a letter of rec. Do I ask the manager, or the owner/boss? I have been a good employee, but I have had some scheduling issues. Any other ways to build up my resume for potential college jobs? all tips appreciated. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Sweetie, the manager IS the boss. The fact that you don't recognize this frightens me. The owner hires a manger to MANAGE the administrative aspects of the business including hiring/firing, training, scheduling, writing letters of recommendation and responding to phone requests for references for former employees. The owner really doesn't want to be involved in the day-to-day issues involving employees. It is never "wrong" to ask the owner...but good luck getting it to happen. Most likely if you ask the owner he/she will agree and then turn around and ask the manager to write it on his/her behalf. You can't have "scheduling issues" and expect to bypass that issue by bypassing the manager.
