What do you think about registering for a house warming party?
-
My husband and I were married six years ago and shortly after we lost all of our wedding gifts in a fire. We didn't have the money to replace them so we have just been surviving on the minimal stuff to get us by while we've been building a house. Now, we have a new home and very little to put in it. I have a decorating theme and colors for my new home. Some people are going to throw me a house warming, would it be ok to register somewhere like Target (nothing too expensive, just everyday stuff we need) for the house warming so people have gift ideas and I can get stuff in the colors I need?

Answer:
Just ask a close friend or relative that if they know of who's coming to your housewarming, maybe they could do you the favor of talking with them. Suggest that you would really, really appreciate some practical gifts, to replace what you lost in that terrible fire. They could further suggest which color schemes you're planning for each room. A gift registry is not done for housewarmings. Tacky. Sorry.

I'm sorry about the fire and losing all your gifts. But I honestly don't think it would be appropriate to register for gifts for a housewarming party. People already have enough gifts to buy with holidays, babies, birthdays, weddings, and so on and so forth. I'm sorry, but I think it'd be better to just appreciate what your friends give you without asking for anything.

I don't know what the etiquette is for these things but I know as a person who might be attending the party, I sure would be glad for a registry that at least gave me idea of what you guys need. I simply hate not knowing what someone's taste is or what they need and I don't like buying useless gifts. You can always register anywhere and tell your friends and family that is what you did so they can spread the word. People can buy from your registry list or if they feel it is too "uppity," they can ignore your registry and bring what they want.

Please... Housewarming parties are hosted by the homeowner, not the homeowners' friends. The purpose of a housewarming is to welcome your dear friends to your your new home. It is not an opportunity to collect gifts. (How is it anyone's fault that you didn't have homeowner's insurance to cover what you lost in the fire?) If people are kind enough to bring a small gift (a plant, wine) then bless their hearts, but they're not obligated to bring a gift to a housewarming. Bottom line: it would be two steps beyond inappropriate to register for housewarming gifts.
