How to be a waitress?

How should a waitress take steak knives to a table?

  • I have recently begun a new job as a waitress and when a table requires steak knives the head waitress has told me to just carry them over in my hand. I don't like doing this surely they should be carried on a tray or something and then how should i place them down on the table and look professional rather than just plonk them down?

  • Answer:

While this may not be the classiest way to do things, every "house" is different and has a different way of doing things. It doesn't matter if you "like doing it that way" the head waitress is you boss. Do it her way.

All the good restaurants I eat at would have the waitress carry them over wrapped in a serviette or napkin (whatever you call them - a cloth you drape across your lap) and on arrival at the table, she opens the cloth, and takes each knife and places it next to the other cutlery (silverware) etc, at each place setting. That looks professional, hygienic and efficient.

any time I have gotten a steak knife-it is either stuck in a cutting board--or the blade is wrapped somehow tightly in a napkin (don't know how they do it--but it is good because it won't hurt anyone and no one has to hand me a knife blade first--they just set it down next to my plate..

As Cogito said. The blade of the knives should not be facing the customers.

just make sure the blade aint sticking out
