Is it typical for an internist to charge a retention fee?

If pizza delivery places charge a delivery fee, should I tip on top of that???

  • I was shocked to discover that all major pizza places charge a delivery fee (over $2 dollars) without making the customer aware of the fee. I was tipping on top of the delivery fee. After I discovered this, I stopped tipping above the fee. I had a delivery person get upset with me because I would not tip above the delivery fee. First, I am a private school middle school teacher and I wish I made millions of dollars, but I dont. With gas over $3 dollars, and the cost of living so high, where does it end?

  • Answer:

I don't tip for pizza delivery. That delivery fee is what I normally tip, but like you after I saw there was that fee, I stopped tipping. With me, tipping at a sitdown place isn't a guarantee. If they are assholes, I don't tip.

SCAM SCAM SCAM 1: You have ALWAYS been paying a delivery fee. Nothing is free; these costs were already included in your price before the companies started this scam. Whether they were itemized or not. 2: Drivers have ALWAYS been paid per-run to help cover fuel/maintenance. 3: Store owners now charge delivery fees usually in the range of 1.50 - 2.00, but their reimbursement rate to drivers has only risen by .25 - .50 cents. Result: 1: Drivers get .25 cents per run more to buy 1/14th a gallon of gas. (At $3.50 a gallon that money is already gone) 2: The owner adds $1.50 per run to his gross receipts. 3: People tip worse because they assume the driver is already getting a $2.00 delivery charge. Its all a deceptive SCAM that hurts the customer AND the driver in the pocketbooks. Today a driver paid $1.00 per run, getting 20mpg can only drive 2.8 miles (one way) before the cost of fuel comes out of his wages. (probably less than minimum wage) This does not even take into account maintenance/repair/commercial insurance/depreciation. My point here is that wages and mileage paid to drivers is already insufficient. If a driver didn't make tips, he would not be working. Nobody aspires to be a pizza guy, they take these jobs because they need them. The driver wishes he made millions too, his costs are high... but he's driving 1 - 200 miles a night, at the $3+ a gallon, and stiffers are leaving him with their bill.

Sorry, but the delivery fee goes to the owner of the pizza place, not the driver that delivers. He or she deserves a tip. If you can't afford that, buy a frozen pizza and bake it at home.

I still tip because most of the time the driver does not get the delivery fee that is charged. The pizza chain gets that fee on top of their normal fee. There are pizza places that do not charge a delivery fee, and when I order out I only use these places.

Normally we add a few dollars on to the regular amount. My dad delivered pizzas in high school and he said that the delivery charge didn't even pay for his gas, even though it was supposed to. I figure if I have the extra money to order out, I can spare a few more dollars.

I can't say for sure but I would imagine that $2 fee goes for gas/mileage reimbursement to the driver and additional liability insurance for the company. I think a tip is still deserved for the driver beyond the delivery fee. I work for a non-profit research organization and make virtually nothing too. However, if I am looking for the convenience of having a pizza delivered, then I am happy to reward the person who brought it to me. If I don't want to pay, I'll either go pick it up or go to the grocery store and get a frozen pizza to cook

Only if you dont want spit on your next pizza...LOL

I delivered pizza for several years and was not happy when I did not recieve a tip. Remember if you order from the same pizza shop often, you will probably see the same delivery guy again, dont make yourself last on the delivery run by not tipping. 15-20% of the bill they are bringing the food to you just like a waiter, the delivery fee is to cover the high price of fuel and keep the car filled with gas & maintence of the vehicle, it takes a huge toll on a car to deliver.

Although a lot of people think like you when it comes to tipping the pizza delivery person, also consider what else you said: "With gas over $3 dollars a gallon..." Unless the delivery person is using a company car or truck, and the gas is free (not likely), the $2.00 delivery charge is used to cover the cost of the gas it took them to deliver the pizza to you, the wear and tear on their car, and the convenience of you not having to leave your home. Having delivered pizzas when I was younger, I know the hassels they have to go through. (no porch light on, rain, snow, cold, etc.) So I always make sure I tip the driver at least $3.00 over the price. They appreciate the gesture, remember the house, and give you good service that way. Otherwise, to be honest... If it came down to who got their pizza first, the tipper, or the non- tipper? Guess who's pizza was delivered first?

jafmo_dude

You still need to tip the driver after the delivery charge. Three dollars is sufficient. i am a pizza delivery driver and i hate it when peple don't tip. to be honest, i have no idea why the company charges a delivery fee to the order. the driver doesn't get any of that. IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO TIP A DELIVERY DRIVER... DON'T HAVE PIZZA DELIVERED!!!!! GAS ISN'T CHEAP! WE NEED MONEY TO DRIVE TO YOUR HOUSE!
