What is the institution?

Does Buddhism play a role in Japanese Politics today? If so, what sect/institution and what do they do?

  • I'm just getting a full picture of Buddhism in Japan today. I've researched the role it plays in the lives of the general population and what rites they practice for it. But after the 16th Century I can't seem to find any Buddhist institution that displayed political sway. Is this, perhaps, because there aren't any?

  • Answer:

I'd be more inclined to believe that Shintoism plays a much more prominent role in Japanese politics than Buddhism does. You might find out a bit more about their affiliation with Shinto as opposed to Buddhism.
