Why do we celebrate Christmas? give gifts?

Why celebrate christmas?? I am curious??

  • If atheist are so Gung Ho against Christianity. Why do they celebrate Christmas ?True meaning of Christmas is Christ!! God's gift to us! That is why we celebrate and give gifts to others. Do atheist not celebrate with presents for their KIDS and FAMILY? Do they like stay at home and have a "every other day kinda day " when the Christians that celebrate Chistmas enjoy watching their kids open presents and tell of the Baby Jesus stories? If atheist are so against Christianity...Do they enjoy the christmas breaks at work ? Also Easter, when Christians believe Jesus died and was ressurrected. Do atheist enjoy the Easter (Now known as Spring Break and trying to turn Christmas into Winter Break ..Santa didnt work nor the Easter Bunny So that is why the seasonal change name IMO ) BUT! our holidays really come from the christian belief! Why dont atheist stay at the job working and let only the Christians have these Holidays? Since Atheist do not believe in such holidays ?

Are you sure you do understand the true meaning of Christmas? Is not your stated meaning only your view that you learned and accepted as a truth? Christmas is originally a pagan holiday celebrating the start of the new year. It is perfectly possible for anyone to celebrate Christmas no matter what they believe in. In fact all Christian holidays are based on pagan holidays. Do some research. I can't believe someone asks this same question every single Christmas. Human beings like to celebrate. Religion is not the only thing worthy of celebration. Get real.

I think that society has commercialized Christmas. It is no longer about Jesus, so other religions feel it may be a day to give gifts. Just a thought.

Why do non bank workers have a day off on a bank holiday?

It wasa pagan holiday long before Christians "borrowed" it. Any decent biblical scholar wil ltell you Jesus was not born in December. Almost all Christmas traditions come from paganism. Like it or not, Christmas is now a secular cultural holiday. The hijacking failed. Atheists are generally not against Christianity per se, but only against efforts to inflict Christianity on the rest of us. Don't mistake your persecution-delusions for reality.

YOUR true meaning of Christmas is Christ. For me it's about friends, family, food, and giving gifts. But if you want to go around thinking all atheists perform blood sacrifices and are generally evil in everything they do, go ahead. I care not.

*drink* Both Christmas and Easter originated as Pagan holidays. If they don't mind, I don't see why you should.

For me it is all about my kids

Oh boo hoo.....I am an atheist and I like to spend the holiday time with family and having a great time. I like any kind of holiday, I really don't care what the historical significance was.

I am not an atheist or any other religion as the idea of being an atheist is not to believe in a religion but that's what atheism is :S So therefor I celebrate christmas for the presents and good food - plus most of my family are christians.
