How old is the earth?

How old is the earth?

  • My friend and I disagree on the age of the earth. I said it was approximately 4.5 billion years. One of the reasons why i say this is because of all the data we have. Fossils, carbon dating, earth's iron core and hosts of other reasons including the distance of stars from the earth. My friend said that the earth is about 6thousand years old. He also told me that these findinds have been published in respectable scientific journals. I looked and couldn' find no respectable journal that agrees with his theory (other than religious sites). If these scientists are so conviced why do they only publish in christian journals? Why not all. How old is the earth and why do think it is that old?

  • Answer:

The earth is about 4.55 billion years old. This is known because of several factors especially Uranium/Lead Dating. By the Way Carbon dating has nothing to do with determining the age of the earth.

Approx. 4.5 billion years old. There is no evidence for creationism and they are never published in scientific journals. "The most direct means for calculating the Earth's age is a Pb/Pb isochron age, derived from samples of the Earth and meteorites."

The Wag

4.55 billion years (plus or minus about 1%).

It's about 4.5 billion years old, as you said. Bible literalists think the earth is 6,000 years old, people were walking around with dinosaurs, all of the continents split from each other at some otherworldly speed for some odd reason, and lots of other nonsense because they are not in touch with reality. They think that scientific research is in the middle of some kind of conspiracy to bring down christianity or some nonsense.

6 thousands years of course....Well that's what the Easter Bunny told me.

Your friend is off! Scientists have tracked back life to over 3 billion years ago, when dinos were still roaming around.

Yes, the Earth is around 4.5 billion years old. No, you will never find a genuine scientific journal that would support creationist nonsense.

How can the earth be 6000 years old when we have evidence of pyramids built around 10,000 BC?

Demoncrat

You're right... it's estimated to be near 4.6 billion years old. There is a margin of error but it is MUCH older than the 4000 - 10000 years that some like to think.
