Why do Americans say Happy Holidays, not Happy Christmas?

Do you say Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas?

  • I say Merry Christmas because I prefer to keep the Christ in Christmas, not censor it with "Happy Holidays"

  • Answer:

    MERRY CHRISTmas!!

It depends on what I am wishing a person. It is stupid to say "Merry Christmas" when I mean "Have a happy Christmas and a happy New Year." You are welcome to your Christmas, but what do you have against New Years?

I say Happy Holidays because I work in a restaurant as a cashier and I don't know if they're religious or not. Some people only get holidays and don't celebrate Christmas.
