A non-catholic in a very religious family dinner question?
-
My uncle is a catholic priest and my whole family is very religious except for me. I never had that spiritual connection and honestly, it just didn't make sense or click with me ever since I was a child. My parents ignored this and constantly forced their faith on me. If I ever spoke out about how I don't believe in it, they'd get very angry and just start the whole "you're going to burn in hell" rant. I'm completely afraid to tell my uncle who is a catholic priest because even though he's suppose to be tolerant of other religions and non-believers, he doesn't want one in his family. I feel like if I ever come out and tell my entire family that I don't share their strict catholic views, I'll become an outsider and they'll treat me differently or worse, kick me out. But honestly, I'm so sick of the whole thing. I'm sick of being forced to go to church on Christmas morning and I'm tired of having to go through long prayers before eating, and just doing religious rituals that I don't believe in. My family's religion is their life. It's their life source and their reason to live. But for me, it's not ideal. It can't be proved and honestly, I think it's made up by humans who needed some comfort about the scary unknown. So what do I do? do I stay silent and just deal with it? Or do I come out and deal with the consequences? It's really scary for me because my family's reaction is very predictable.

Answer:
You know what's funny? My father was the same exact thing. My father had thought catholicism had some things that he would disagree with. You should tell them that it is just who you are, and you should even say that catholics like you should be tolerant of other beliefs. My whole family is catholic except for my father and I. Just try to tolerate things like "okay now it's time to say the grace" and everything, but you should tell them that you shouldn't be forced to practice things like church and strict views.

You can stand up for yourself, but it depends on the consequences. Either way, don't live your life in fear as they do.

You are not separate from your family until you move away from them. You participate in the life of your family because they are your family. It sounds like you are kind of intolerant of them, too.

I have gone thru the same situation as u.. 1) Tell them the truth and face many persecutions and hardships OR 2) Silently cry your heart out and overcome.. uccspace.net english.watv.org
You should come out. God doesnt want fake worshipers. Dont take that into offense....but i honestly dont see the point in going to church if you dont belive it. Best of luck! :)

God wants you to be devoted to him on your own free will. It's better you grew up in a religious family & not believe in their religious practices then to grow up in your religious family & agree with their rituals just to be twice the hypocrites they are. People who are truley devoted to God & Jesus do not just go to church on holidays......nor do they drag their children with them to church...nor are they considered religious. True christian parents teach their children (starting at age 2 or 3)about God & Jesus at home (not at church). If you are not 18 yr old yet ...don't talk to your family about it yet. The Catholic (& all denominational) churches do not follow God's Word . If you want to give yourself a fair chance at understanding God ....You need to seek out a Non-denominational bible church & study the bible . See what it says a disciple is . Don't depend on people to tell you about God & Jesus. You need to see for yourself.
