One Theological Questions For Trinitarian Christians...Does Gods understanding of morality change?

  • Question: Trinitarian Christianity: How can Jesus of Nazareth be the God of Israel (With respect to the 5 Facts, this is a direct contradiction)? Does Gods understanding of morality change? A. "And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day." Joshua 10:13, English Standard Version (©2001) B. "But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you," Matthew 5:44, English Standard Version (©2001) C. "God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?" Numbers 23:19, English Standard Version (©2001) D. "“For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed." Malachi 3:6, English Standard Version (©2001) Fact 1: Trinitarian Christianity: Jesus of Nazareth is the second Person of the Trinity (He is the God of Israel.) Fact 2: Joshua asked the God of Israel for more time, in order to kill his enemies (Joshua 10:12). Fact 3: The God of Israel (Agreed), he froze the sun and the moon, only so Joshua could continue to kill his enemies. Fact 4: Trinitarian Christianity: Jesus of Nazareth (God of Israel), commanded love and forgiveness for enemies. Fact 5: The God of Israel does not lie, does not change his mind. Question: Trinitarian Christianity: How can Jesus of Nazareth be the God of Israel (With respect to the 5 Facts, this is a direct contradiction)? Does Gods understanding of morality change?

God's justice does not impede on God's love.

Jesus or Hellfire

It would appear so. When you look at the later prophets of the Old Testament, they are big on "god's" love and care for the widows and "god" even declares "I hate your sacrifices and burnt offerings". Micah 6:8 speaks of true religion as to "do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your god". And the "god" of the New Testament is a "god" of love much more than in the OT. BUT, not that even in the early books of the OT, "god" does speak of the less fortunate and of the stranger in your lands, etc, and shows much compassion in places and the "god" of the NT can be quite judgmental in places. So "god" does not change as sharply as it would seem on the surface. Same schizophrenic "good guy/bad guy" persona, the emphasis just evolves over time and "god" mellows out. Blessings on your Journey!

Eclectic Heretic

How is any of this a contradiction? Firstly the old and new testament are two different perspectives. One from God's perspective and one for Jesus's. Secondly, from my understanding it never says to not defend yourself. If someone is trying to kill me I have every biblical right to defend myself. That differs from the perspective that if somone is slandering my name that I should use the same low methods to counterattack. In Jesus perspective I should accept the persecution and actually embrace it. (wow right?) A second point that could be brought up that Jesus died instead of fighting back, but he did not die for nothing. He died for the forgiveness of humans sins. I do not have the ablitiy to die for such a great purpose. E.g. You try to kill me for being a christian, I die, I cant accept responsibility for the human race as Jesus did. This last point is purely person without any biblical validation that I know of, but I have always thought of the trinity as three separate entities that interact as one. So it is not a contradiction for Jesus and God to have two different perspectives. It also must be noted that it can become complicated when trying to compare the ideologies of the first and second testament. Why do you think the Jews have trouble accepting Jesus as the Messiah?

God gave the governments the sword. Governments go to war People deal with each other the way Jesus told us to. There is no contradiction.
