Why does the Earth rotate ?

    in space there is hardly any friction, so if i throw a ball then it will pretty much go on forever if it doesn't hit anything. So, if i put a spin on that ball it will spin forever. The earth was either created spinning or when hit by the huge piece of rock that made the moon but a spin on it. its just kinetic energy that was past on to it by another object. if you meant orbit to understand this one has to know that the earths orbit is not a perfect circle. The Earth is falling towards the sun, but traveling so fast horizontally that it doesn't have to time to every hit the sun. Its like a ball on the end of string, your really pulling it towards you, but giving it a speed on the x axies so that it doesn't hit your hand if you meant

Earth spins because of the way it formed. The solar system began as a spinning solar nebula of gasses and debris. As this debris began to condense we see two things: 1) Conservation of angular momentum. Like when a skater pulls his/her arms in and starts spinning faster, when the mass of the planets became denser, or more concentrated on a central point, they started to spin faster. 2) An object in motion tends to stay in motion. Since there is no force, save for gravity and tides (minimal effect), Earth keeps spinning. Its a bit more complicated than that, but I tried to make it simple.

its due to the inter universal magnetic and attractive,repulsive forces..........................we can consider earth same as that of electron in the nucleus....................and the sun as nucleus.............................it is estimated that with in 500 billion years the earth would be merged in to sun
