How can I Accurately Test Water Quality?

My science project for school failed miserably (none of my plants grew) and I am trying to come up with another experiment. I only have a week to do it, though, so I am scrambling! I have come up with an experiment that involves testing the quality of water. I just want to test it for cleanliness, but I do not know how to do it? Can anyone give me some tips on a good way to ACCURATELY (this is a project where things need to be controlled) test water to see how clean it is or the nutrients that are in it? Or an affordable home water testing kit? Thank you!

You can buy a Brita water filter and see how much stuff gets caught in the filter like sediments this is the only affordable appliance if you are testing chemicals then it will be very expensive to buy something to measure good luck On your project!!!
