What is the single best electrical ground on planet earth?

If humans did not pull oil out of the ground, what purpose would the oil serve the planet Earth ?

  • It's not there just to take up space. I just wonder what the consequences are for pulling all this oil out of the ground.

    Oil was created millions and millions of years ago during major extinction periods. It is composed of ancient organisms "kinda like algae" that got trapped and was covered over by rock. Over time, it turned into a natural resource. The thing is.. oil is not just everywhere under the earth's crust. These geological reserves of oil had to be created under special conditions and took millions of years. Our problem is that we are using the stuff faster than mother nature can make it. Eventually we WILL run out, and there will be no more-- until millions of years from now. It could be today, it could be 200 years from now, but it will run out.

Why do you presume a purpose? It has no purpose. It just is. There are consequences to removing it, of course. Directly speaking, it affects how the host rocks distribute the weights of overlying materials, may affect compaction (compactibility) in the host material and the ability of fluids to migrate through the system. One could see subsidence at the surface from removal of oil, for example, and this does sometimes happen but depends very much of the situation.

It would simply form part of the earth's crust, which it does, anyway. Your point you want answered simply has nothing more specific to be said about it. You could ask what does water in the water table do. It's there. It does not do anything more specific than that although under particular circumstances, it can erode limestone.
