When the Earth's Magnetic Poles swap?

What would happen if the earths poles switched?

  • we are learning about paleomagnetism in my archaeology course and the teacher was talking about how at numerous periods over time, the earth's poles have switched. what would happen if they switched today? would the seasons change? or would nothing happen? if the north pole suddenly became the south? i'm a bit confused as to how or why this switching happened...

the only thing that will change is the way your toilet flushes.

Teacher is correct, poles have switched in eons past. There is some evidence they are in the slow process of doing it again at this very time. Seasons are defined by the earth's orbit and tilt, not something the pole would affect. Weather could change, Bird and other migration could be affected, ocean currents could change. Certainly navigation would be confused. Odd to even think about, isn't it?

That would totally depend on the speed at which it changed places. If it was over a period of hours, it would be an extinction level event. If it was over weeks, it would be bad enough, with entire biospheres geared towards one set of conditions, now in another. If it happened over decades or centuries, it would still cause vast weather pattern changes, hurricanes, typhoons, possible ice ages, etc. How it happens is this: if the Earth were the actual size of an Egg, the real eggshell would be 10x thicker than the crust of the Earth really is! This means that there is a possiblity of slippage over the molten layers inside the earth. If the crust were to come 'unhinged' it could slide over the molten interior any way it wanted.

Yes the poles have switch several times in the past and most believe that we are in the process of it now. The switch is most likely due to the molten mix the plates float on. The g.p.s. systems would not function along with a host of other magnetically reliant instruments. ships, planes, birds. The strength of magnetic fields have fluctuated increasingly in the past few years. It has been recorded threw out the world as long as there have been ships.

North would become south. Probably a big problem with volcanoes, earthquakes tsunamis etc. But no one is sure an it cannot be proven scientifically.
