How to tell if a tsunami is coming?

Why didnt most people know a Tsunami was coming?

  • In the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami most people didn't know a tsunami was coming... Why didn't they know. Were they're warnings. Or were they to late? Please Help... SOURCES WOULD BE GREAT!!!

  • Answer:

Oh you mean all those people who were on the beach and they all saw the tide go far out really quickly and wondered where the sea went so they walked along the sea bed picking up souvenirs oblivious to the fact that this was what happens just before a huge tidal wave / tsunami hits. I think that was just complete ignorance, the warning was very clear but at least they enjoyed their last few minutes of life, chances are if they had have known what was coming they probably wouldn't have had time to get away so basic knowledge of geology probably wouldn't have done them that much good in that specific instance.

There was no indian ocean tsunami warning set up then (it was set up in response to the tsunami). Moreover the regions affected include many poor and remote coastal communities, that may not have had effective systems for delivering a warning.

It was Indonesia. Lack of intelligence and proper instruments. Though, after the tsunami, Warnings and the proper instruments were set up as an effect of the tsunami
