What are career options available in geology?

What geology (career) related work can I do with only a HS degree?

  • I have tried my community college's science department and they're all ***holes. I'm on my own here. Does anyone have any suggestions for geology related work I can do with only a high school degree? When I say geology related I mean I don't want to do retail or restaurant work but as close to geology as possible. Surveys, research samples.. anything. heck I'll do it for free if I truly can't get a job close enough for right now. I live in Virginia does anyone know if this is at all possible yet? I've tried some labs that did not mention needing a degree but I guess you do since I have not heard back from them.

  • Answer:

Most geological companies do require support personnel with geological sites and research. So look for those jobs which range from drivers to people who go to sites and handle the samples for return to a lab so the packing, shipping etc. There are also other jobs in relation in the offices and labs that do not require a post secondary education but many companies do like to see such as they may promote from within before going outside and this means the workers have the education they require for advancement.

To get a geology job you have to have at minimun a bachelor's degree and in most cases a master's degree. It's like trying to get a job as an engineer with only a high school diploma. Im sorry, I'd suggest you stick with school, so you can get that job you want that also pays good.
