What are potential good jobs that involve travel?

What specific geoscience jobs involve international travel?

  • If you like active, fast-paced jobs with lots of travel, maybe 50% office and 50% field work, what geoscience career paths should you be looking at?

  • Answer:

In the broadest terms, Mineral Exploration and Oil work. I work out on Oil Rigs, and work 4 weeks on the rig (offshore), and then have 4 weeks back onshore (no work at all, free time). I've met people who work half on the rigs, half in the office as well. A mate of mine works out in Aus, mining/exploring for Coal, and spends a lot of time in the field/on mine sites as well, then some office work collating the findings. Again, it largely depends on the job in hand, if you do a lot of exploration, that will be a lot more fieldwork. If you go into surveying and building works, that involves more office work, but some site visits. From what I've seen, you get much more fieldwork the lower you are in a company, and the lower your pay. At uni, we had presentations from a load of guys in industry, all geoscience based. Every one of them said the higher you go, the more time you spend behind a desk. Shame, really.

I agree with Joseph, if you're after international travel its best to go into mineral exploration or oil exploration. Be aware though that some areas you can get sent to are quite volatile and remote. I've had friends who have run into trouble in pakistan, nigeria and the middle east. Saying that though there are plenty of nice places, Brazil, Australia and Dubai spring to mind.
