What is some evidence of continental drift?

What is the theory of continental drift, what does it entail, who came up with the theory ( any evidence )?

  • Answer:

The Theory of Continental Drift was proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912. It stated that the continents once were assembled into a supercontinent and that it broke up and the fragments drifted to their present locations. The evidence was that when they were reassembled similar rock units could be found on both sides of the continents. Despite this excellent line of reasoning most geologists ridiculed Wegener since his theory lacked a mechanism that caused the continents to drift. Modern Plate Tectonic theory provides that mechanism (convection of the mantle which moves the plates along) along with providing an explanation to many other observed geological phenomena seen in the rock record.

Eugene Wegner is often cited as the father of CD, but the idea came from before him and wasn't taken serious;y until after his death. It involves the view that the Earth is dynamic, being heated internally by radioactive decay and that heat causes mantle convection that drives the plates. Evidence abounds: in the magnetic variations of the rocks on either side of a rift valley; in the history gleaned from various ice layers and other methods; of predictable consequences resulting from the creation of new crust and the subduction of old; in the pieced-together history of the Earth which shows that continents have moved from polar to equatorial climates, back and forth through the eons, and consequences of that, such as variable tidal brake effects.
