Earthquake A had a magnitude of 8.2 on the Richter scale. At the same time an earthquake B with magnitude 4.8 caused only minor damage. How many times more intense was earthquake A than earthquake B? please help
-
Answer:
Approximately 4000 x more intense. 4.8 -> 5.8 is 10 x more 4.8 -> 6.8 is 100x more 4.8 -> 7.8 is 1000x more 4.8 -> 8.8 is 10000x more Since each .1 step over 7.8 is 1000, 8.2, which is .4 over would equal 4000 time stronger. It is late, but I think I did the math right. http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/natural-disasters/earthquake6.htm
