What exactly is a fault bucket and what causes it?

What fault causes Earthquakes?

  • I initially thought that the San Andreas Fault was the only one that created earthquakes. But I realized that it was the "master" fault and it was composed up of several other faults. Same goes for the cascadia subduction zone. Can anyone tell me which of the main faults of the two tectonic regions create earthquakes? And can someone tell me where I can find the information? Thank you so much!

    Faults do not cause earthquakes, stress and strain on rigid lithospheric plates cause earthquakes: when this stress is suddenly released, strain occurs. This form of strain is called an earthquake. Further buildup of stress can extent a particular fault, but not where strain already has caused a fault. I cannot tell you where I found this information since I learned about it from taking Structural Geology.

All fault lines cause earthquakes. The San Andreas fault runs between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. It has 3 segments: Northern, Central, and Souther. Only the Northern and Southern segments produce earthquakes. The Central segment is "slipping without snagging" so to speak. The Cascadia fault separates the Juan De Fuca and Pacific plates. The Juan de Fuca plate is actually fractured into 3 segments. The Explorer and Gorda plates, which are at the northernmost and southernmost ends of the Juan De Fuca plate, are responsible for almost all of the seismic activity there, largely because of the fact that those sections are seismically active on all 4 side (bordering with Pacific, Juan De Fuca, and North American)
