What's the difference between geology and earth sciences?

  • I'm applying to university and what to do geology. I researched the programs offered at these universities to become a geologist, and the choices are either earth sciences or geology. My question is what's the difference between geology and earth sciences?

  • Answer:

They're pretty close, and depending on the two programs, they can be nearly identical. However, a geology degree will focus on earth and direct "rock type" earth processes. Earth science will probably include more eduction into other processes, like oceanography and atmospheric science. But like I said, it all depends on the university. My degree says geology, but I got massive doses of just about every earth science field that you could imagine.

Other answers

My university is the opposite of Mark V's. I have an Earth Science degree, but have learned little more than how minerals and different types of rocks are formed and transformed. My Environmental Science courses, however, taught me a broader range of subjects like climatology, oceanography, and biology.
