Is global warming a hoax?

  • Well my science teacher told my class today that global warming is a hoax to make America weaker, less industrial nation. He went on to say that all the other planets are heating up, so it must be the suvs and power plants the aliens are using, he says that global warming is just a plot by other countries so the united states cannot be as strong as it once was. Thoughts?

  • Answer:

    Chinese plot probably

Your teacher should not be teaching science. He clearly lets his personal opinions get in the way of objectively interpreting data.

I agree with him for the most part. There is little scientific evidence of any "man-made" global warming. CO2 which is blamed is less than 3% of the so called greenhouse gases and of that only about 4% is from burning fossil fuels. ( The remainder comes from the oceans and volcanic activity.) And remember Greenhouse gases make up less than 1% of the total atmosphere and about 4% at ground level. Make up your own mind! The science surely has not been pro oven. Unless you want to rely on that political scientist ALgore for climatology.

Your teacher should never tell you hoax or reality on this issue, because while there is lots of evidence for it, there is still enough evidence against man-made global warming that there are still questions. Does global warming exist - yes, the climate is getting warmer Do greenhouse gases exist - yes, and we know what they are, CO2, CO, methane, nitrous oxide, particulate matter, water vapor among others Are some greenhouse gases natural - yes, they are, especially carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, methane, and water vapor; from natural transpiration of trees, oceans, even water, and also volcanoes and livestock Do our power plants and vehicles put out greenhouse gases - yes, they do, anyone with $25 piece of equipment can tell you that Has your planet gone through many global warmings and ice ages in the past - yes, we know this via examination of gases in ice cores and sediment cores of rock, fossils, and organic matter; there are millenial, centurial, and decadal cycles. Even if this is entirely natural warming, would it hurt us to develop clean energy? Or more importantly, renewable energy, so that we WOULDN'T be hurt by foreign nations, as we would no longer be spending billions of dollars a year to buy oil from countries who don't even like us? Of course. This pretty much blows away your teacher's theory. He's obviously an idiot. The only question about "hoax" is whether it's a natural phenomenon or a man-made (or man-influenced) phenomenon. Your teacher may be referring to the Kyoto Protocol, which is an international agreement to limit and begin to clean greenhouse gas emissions. There are currently 187 signatories, and the United States is not one of them. Why? Because, yes, it is political and economic. China puts out more greenhouse gases than we do, but they're allowed to keep on pouring without restraint because the world has given them "developing nation" status. Same with India. So we haven't signed it, because stopping greenhouse gases is expensive, as is developing clean energy technology - and even more expensive to put that green energy into place. So we didn't sign the Protocol, because that way we are not required to limit our emissions, which means not spending lots of money on new technology. It would be a high up-front cost to implement these new technologies, but it would create new jobs, new industries, would free us from "dependency on foreign oil," and after the initial up-front cost, it's incredibly cheap to operate. Don't tell your teacher that you think he's an idiot, but tell your teacher that I called him an idiot who has clearly been spending too much time listening to FOX News and Rush Limbaugh than actually doing any real research on the subject.

Earth Man

Global warming is part of a natural cycle that occurs on the earth. Human presence is just contributing to it. I believe in global warming and climate change and that it cannot be prevented. I am amazed that a science teacher would take that view - isn't teaching global warming and the greenhouse effect part of a science teacher's job? And global warming isn't just America's problem, even though they are major contributors to emissions, it is a world-wide problem. If America becomes weaker in response to decreasing emissions, then so will all of the other industrial nations. "SUVs and power plants the aliens are using". Hmm, good theory.

I don't know about all the other planets heating up, but I do know the Earth has been through several cooling and heating cycles. If you doubt this, then how do you explain the ice age, and coming out of it. I think global warming is true, but I don't think it has anything to do with what man is doing. It's just a normal cycle that the Earth goes through. Interesting pitch on the plot from other countries though.

Global warming is really stupid. If the earth needs to heat up to kill all the polar bears in the world, so what? That's the way life was meant to be. We can't do anything to make the earth cooler unless some lunatic wants to go shut down the sun, which is quite impossible.

Lol don't be an idiot. isn't it the u.s that went as far as making a movie about it to spread awareness? your teacher should keep his opinions and ignorance about other countries to himself, especially in front of impressionable students such as yourself.

Bravo, Mark V, couldn't have said it any better.
