Which is the warmest layer of the atmosphere?

Why is the bottom of the troposphere warmer than any other part of the atmosphere?

  • I was just wondering. Why is the troposphere (the furthest layer from the sun. We live in it) the warmest part of the atmosphere despite the fact that it's furthest away from the sun.

  • Answer:

The bottom of the troposphere is warmer than any other part of the atmosphere b/c the bottom has the highest density (more molecules bumping into each other) and the lowest near-surface layer is warmed via conduction. Air is a great insulator which is why double and triple pane glass is used in our windows...fiberglass insulation is used in houses (a lot of air trapped in between the fibers) and goose down jackets (a lot of air trapped in between the feathers).

The troposphere is the closest section of the atmosphere to the Earth and therefore is the first to come in contact with the long wave radiation emitting from the Earth's surface.
