  Stop dumping waste directly in to the lake or a river that feeds the lake. This could include everything from industrial acid waste to human waste. Stop agricultural runoff that brings organic and inorganic chemicals into the ecosystem. Stop allowing powered boats on lakes, which can often leak gasoline and other oil/grease products into the water. That's right. Get some exercise and use oars. Once you've stopped these primary sources, you may have to clean a lake that is already damaged in one way or another, which will require a lot of time and money to remediate. Fixing something broken is always FAR more difficult than the act of breaking it.
