How is geology related to forestry?

  • I'm applying for a local town bursary to help pay for the costs of my post-secondary education. The bursary says, "Preferably for a student pursuing a study related to forestry." I know that no other students are going into any sort of forestry-related career and I feel that geology is probably the closest. I have a few ideas, but does any one have any suggestions or input on what i could say as to why/ how geology is related to forestry ? Help would be appreciated.

  • Answer:

How is it not! Volcanism and plate tectonics; the viscosity of the eruption, whether its felsic, intermediate or mafic lava. All this chemistry plays a major role on what type of tree will flourish in the soil. e.g. Pine trees prefer acidic soils. Felsic is acidic with rocks which are enriched in the lighter elements such as silicon, oxygen, aluminium, sodium, and potassium. Mafic is more alkaline or basic and intermediate is more of a mix. Rivers, Glaciers, Tsunami's (caused by earthquakes), Geophysics of the earth and solar system controlling the climate etc etc etc.... all play the Major roles in forestry. You may also say that the geology of the earth controls where humans live and farm and thus controls where a human wants to plant a forest. That Question could turn into a 20,000+ word thesis very easily.

"Forestry is the art and science of managing forests, tree plantations, and related natural resources. The main goal of forestry is to create and implement systems that allow forests to continue a sustainable continuation of environmental supplies and services. ..."~http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forest… Geology is the study of the soil, rocks, and the Earth. Forests and trees and plants play a role in the ecology, and ecology relates the interaction of living things with their environments, which include rock and soil. Tree roots are also a source of mechanical weathering of rocks, and large-scale deforestation, especially on slopes of mountains and hills, causes accelerated soil erosion and enormous amounts of minerals to flow down the hill, stripping away layers of soil that contain nutrients necessary for tree and plant growth. The minerals lost from the soil may also flow into bodies of water, causing lake eutrophication, algal blooms, and otherwise drastically depleting the biodiversity of such ecosystems. A related example may be the creation of the Dust Bowl in the US during the Great Depression (except it's with grass instead of trees). So soil and forests are related. I think I'm digressing here. Forestry and geology are certainly related, but perhaps consider the link between forestry and biology or between forestry and ecology.
