Why does the speed of seismic waves increase with distance?
-
I know for sure that the speed of both primary and secondary waves both speed up with distance from the epicenter of an earthquake, as shown here; http://www.regentsearthscience.com/tsunami/pands.gif but why?
-
Answer:
The speed of the seismic waves traveling from epicentre to the opposite end of the globe increases with increasing distance.it is because of the changing physical characteristics of the layers in the earth's interior. pressure tends to increase the speed of seismic waves. Pressure increases with depth in Earth because the weight of the rocks above gets larger with increasing depth. http://eqseis.geosc.psu.edu/~cammon/HTML/Classes/IntroQuakes/Notes/waves_and_interior.html http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/wwatch/earthquakes/indepth.htm

This is not true. The speed of seismic waves is determined by the composition and physical state of the medium through which they travel.
