Where to dispose of used alkaline batteries?

• Have several alkaline batteries of the c,d,9volt, and n size as well as aaa & aa size where can I safely dispose of them in my local area? Seems that the place where purchased should know answer or provide a bucket or small canister for customers, that way they could be picked up at the source and disposed of in a quantity.
