How old is the Earth?
-
I saw on Yahoo! news about the 34,000 year old organism. Then I saw the comments going all over the place about people saying the Earth is actually 6,000 years old and how this is some breakthrough? I thought the Earth was a few billion years old.. o_o I never did pay attention in Science class 8( I'm in college and I swear it was something billion. I slept but I HEARD BILLION!! D:

Answer:
It's 4.5 billion years old. The "6,000"-ers are just deluded creationists.

Earth is approximately 4.6 billion years old, according to modern science. The claims of a 6000 year age for the earth are based on superstitious religious beliefs and not upon science.

earth is 4.5 billion years old. The bible says its 6,000, but thats ******* ridiculous.

According to reliable radiometric dating techniques used by geologists, the Earth is at least 4.5 billion years old (that's 4,500,000,000 years before present). This is based on measurements on outcrops of very ancient rocks (not fossils - a widely believed misconception!). But these rocks themselves were probably been derived from even older rocks which formed the first-formed continental crust.

The Earth is indeed BILLIONs of years old. It is generally accepted that it is between 4.3-4.7 billion yeats old. The reason that there is no exact figure is that there are no rocks old enough to carbon date for a closer figure. The oldest rocks in the world are not much older than 3 billion years old. This is because (in part) that earth constantly renews its crust with subduction (tectonic plates being forced back into the earth's hot mantle to be melted and make new rocks) and because at some point a planetoid collided with the early earth which melted all of the existing rocks and eventually forming the moon from the collected debris. So even though the oldest rocks have gone the way of the old rock stars, we can also get a good idea of the earth's age by looking at the age of the other planets and asteroids since they formed at a predicable rate.

Every method used to date the earth (other than a Bible) shows an earth that is billions of years old.

Unlike what the other person said earlier, radiometric age dating works well, it is very reliable, and has stood up to testing. That being said, the earth is 4.5 billion years old, roughly. We calculate this age based on several factors. 1) the age of the oldest rocks on earth. 2) moon rocks we got from the Apollo missions. 3) the ages of some asteroids and comets, which we infer based on meteorite ages. All this information taken together gives us an estimate of how old the earth is, and that is around 4.5 billion years old. In the future, I would like to encourage those who answer questions on the science pages to please stick to science. I don't go over to the religion pages and debate you on articles or matters of faith. Please stay on your side of the tracks!

The Earth, along with all the other planets in our solar system, are 4 billion years old. The sun is 5 billion.

idk exact, but its WAY WAY WAYYYYYY over 6,000! thats just plain stupid, think about it, with BC and AD combined, its alot more than that. but it IS sumthin billion

Evolutionists believe the earth to be several billion years old, approx. 4.6 billion, which they calculated using radio-metric dating, one problem, radio-metric dating his somewhat unreliable, for example, it has dated days old rocks from Mt. St. Hellens at 200,000+ years old. Young earth creationists believe the earth to be 6004 or 6005 years old, which they calculated from genealogies in the bible, and if days actual age =200,000 years dated age (as above) then 4.6 billion years dated age could = 6004 years. notice all the thumbs down? they don't want you to know that they could be wrong. | | | | | | V
