What does the earths magnetic field, do for the earth?

  • I just heard a little bit about the earths magnetic field, and I was wondering what it really does for the earth? Besides the fact that it is the reason why compasses point north, what does the magnetic field do for the earth?

    Bakey is correct. It is a defense against the strong solar radiation coming from the sun. The solar winds are deflected by the magnetosphere. If this radiation were allowed to make it through to the surface we organic life would be greatly damaged or destroyed. The Earth's magnetic field is quite useful to life on this planet. The first property of the magnetic field is the large envelope around the planet that it forms. It deflects the solar wind protecting Earth's atmosphere from being stripped away. The solar wind is full of charged ions that would cause friction with the atmosphere if they would run into it unimpeded. Without a magnetic field Earth would be a mess like Venus or a near airless ruin like Mars. Many birds use the Earth's magnetic field to guide them as they do seasonal migrations north and south.
