Why does soil erosion increase flooding?

Why does soil erosion increase flooding?

  • Please help, I have an exam on Monday :(

  • Answer:

Think about this: A sloping meadow full of grass (the non-eroded example) and a sloped concrete road (the eroded example). If you think of the concrete road with dirt, sticks, leaves and other loose debris on it, so much the better. Pour 100 gallons of water onto the upper end of each. How far does the water flow down each one? How fast does it flow? Why? Does it carry other items with it when it flows? Does the flow push things out of the way? Visualize what happens in each case, then see if you can draw the obvious conclusion.

Other answers

obstructions (grass, trees, roots) block the direct flow of the drainage of water. it distributes the water over a wider area and deceases the amount of water associated with flooding
