Compare the biodiversity and stratification of the Tropical Rain Forest, Deciduous Forest, and Coniferous Forest
-
Answer:
Tropical rainforests are the most species-rich of all biomes and have unparalleled biodiversity •One square kilometer of Amazon rainforest can contain about 90,790 tons of living plants which is the largest collection of living plants and animals in the world. One of the most important features of a tropical rainforest is its vertical stratification. Different microclimates and microhabitats exist in the layers. This layering is a major factor in the rich biodiversity of rainforests. Emergents: includes giant trees that are higher than the canopy and has many birds and insects. Canopy includes the upper parts of the trees that grow very close together and seemingly form a garden in the air. It has insects, birds, reptiles and mammals. Understory: includes the dark, cool area under the leaves and above the ground. Forest Floor: includes most of the wildlife, especially insects; and the largest animals usually live here. Deciduous Forest, Canopy is moderately dense and allows light to penetrate, resulting in well-developed and richly diversified understory vegetation and stratification of animals. Flora is characterized by 3-4 tree species per square kilometer. Trees are distinguished by broad leaves that are lost annually and include such species as oak, hickory, beech, hemlock, maple, basswood, cottonwood, elm, willow, and spring-flowering herbs. Fauna is represented by squirrels, rabbits, skunks, birds, deer, mountain lion, bobcat, timber wolf, fox, and black bear. Coniferous Forest Spruce, pines, firs & hemlocks predominate.Summers typically dry; long, harsh winters, soil is thin, acidic & poor in nutrients, understory of shrubs. Structurally, these forests are rather simple, generally consisting of two layers: an overstory and understory. Some forests may support an intermediate layer of shrubs. Pine forests support an herbaceous understory that is generally dominated by grasses and herbaceous perennials.
