Why is the core of the earth molten?

The earth's core is molten. Why not generate electicity using its thermal energy?

  • I'm not saying drill to the core, but the earth heats up as you get toward the center. Why not drill as close to the center as you need to in order to generate electricity. In Iceland for example you don't need to drill very far at all.

  • Answer:

It's a worthwhile idea, and many scientists are working on it now. One of the technical challenges is that as you get closer to the heat, the earth material becomes more unstable, plus the pressures due to the weight of rock become immense.

But that's what geothermal energy systems are all about. Are you trying to reinvent the wheel? I'm curious!
