What happens when ALL the ice in the ARTIC ice cap melts?

Will the Panama Canal be used as much if the ice in the artic cap melts thereby allowing passage to shipping?

  • Answer:

Good question. There is a huge amount of posturing going on at the moment, with Canada claiming that the Northwest Passage is in Canadian sovereign waters and the rest of the world claiming that this is an international shipping lane. As it becomes more and more feasible to use the northern route and there is more potential revenue involved, expect the fight to get more vocal.

depending on where they are going, then almost certainly it will NOT be cheaper to go up and around. Large ships use hundreds of gallons of fuel per mile. The fuel costs would dwarf the cost of the canal. Although, if the ice caps melt enough for a ship to just go through, the bigger problem will be that the sea level will rise so high that the panama canal (at high tide) with probably be inundated with water, and unusable.

The Arctic cap will not fully melt, but it will add enough water to make Panama a semi-lake....BUT, what about the underwater obstacles? It would be far better to follow the original Canal for safe passage.
