Answer:
For the most part, you'll have to deal with rocks, minerals, fossils, etc. and study them - it may be under a microscope or you'll use different chemicals which can affect your health. You'll do a lot of evaluations and keep a lot of samples. And the tools you need to use in field work are really really expensive (for professional use). But on the bright side, you'll get to do a lot of field work which involves going to places all over the world! My professor in geology have been to many places around the world, and when he tells a story about his field work, it seems really fun. Plus, you'll have knowledge about rocks and minerals that an average person wouldn't know. You'll feel proud when you speak of your field works. Hope this helps.

pros: 1.) You're not stuck in a lab or an office the whole time. 2.) In college, you get cool field trips just about every semester (depending where you go to school, I guess). 3.) Great job opportunities, even if you're not into the whole oil company business. 4.) In my opinion, the people you meet, from professors to professionals, are the most the most laid back people ever. 5.) Two words: field camp. Indiana University's Field Camp was the best 6 weeks of my life. cons: 1.) Depending on where you go to college and if you're getting a B.A. or B.S., the degree is a lot of hard work. Geology is a true combination of all the sciences and math. 2.) To get into the oil industry (where the big bucks are for geologists), you have to get at least an M.S. Most major oil companies won't even want to interview you for an internship unless you're in a graduate program. Hope this helps! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. My email is longa AT indiana DOT edu. I'm finishing up a B.S. in geology at Indiana University.

Our son is a geologist. He is the lab manager. He also majored in Oceanography, that was his first choice, but after living in the desert, that did not work out for him. He did a lot of core samples, soil samples and rock evaluations. He loves rock and he is quite good at what he does and is very knowledgeable in that field. It is a good idea to have two majors so you can fall back on one if the other does not "pan" out.
