  • climate refers to the average weather condition in an area. both mechanical and chemical weathering occurs in faster in wet cool climates. rainfall provides water needed for chemical change as well as frezzing and thawing. marble is a hard yet permeable rock. permeable means the marble has a lot of tiny connected air spaces. suppose a marble monument was places outside for a 100 years in a region with a wet cool climate how would mechanical and chemical weathering occur in marble? what is the difference between mechanical and chemical weathering?

    Mechanical would be the expansion and contraction of the material from heat and cold enviornmental exposure,chemical would be oxidation and corrosion from acid rain exposure,smog and chemical pollutants in the air,breaking down the composition of the marble,changing it's color and structure.

Mechanical weathering is the result of the freezing and thawing of water, the abrasion and "wear and tear" caused by water or wind - and the tiny, gritty particles carried by the wind -, a plant root growing into a crack in the marble, expanding and breaking off a piece ... essentially the simple stuff we can easily understand. It's like sawing or sanding a board: You end up with smaller pieces - but they're still wood! Chemical weathering is the result of chemical activity: Acid rain eating away at the marble is a real good example: The marble is chemically changed. It no longer exists as marble. There is no collection of marble dust at the base of the statue! Obviously, freezing and thawing won't be an issue in Jamaca... unless it's Jamaca, NY. The chemicals in the air and/or water will vary from place to place - as will the physical environment. Therefore, the type and rate of weathering is also "site specific."
