How to use these skills in a job?

What are the most useful things you learnt studying science or maths & how do you use these skills in your job?

  • Answer:

Lots of people have already talked about science based jobs, but I think the most valuable things I learned from studying science & the maths that underpins it are certain habits of thought and ways of looking at information. For example, if I see yet another news article on how eating lots of chocolate will make you thin, or how reading Facebook will give you cancer, I don't accept it at face value. I ask where the authors got their data & what the study the article is based on actually said. Science isn't just about what will come in handy in the world of work. It's about being able to interpret data and information, about logical ways of understanding the world around you. Good luck and I hope you stick with your science and maths studies!

Hi, By far the most useful thing I learnt from studying science and maths was the ability to think clearly and identify the correct, most relevant question to ask and then to plan what is required to answer it. That is something I use every day in my job as a safety adviser and in life in general. Bill

Trigonometry and algebra are probably the most useful things I learned. I use them virtually every day as a mathematically oriented geologist.

In actual practical fact- the most useful was logic and programming - which I now teach in IT. But don't forget that maths and science are not just vocational. Via those subjects I developed a much better understanding of the world (universe),not least the ideas that are behind "Nature's Numbers"- without which I would feel that my 4 score and 10 on this planet would have been wasted. I cannot put a value on the non-vocational use of what I have learnt in science and maths. Even so - contrary to what most people say after being employed "I will never need that maths I was taught in high school" - look hard enough and you will find it is every much behind everything you do. Case in point is nature - take a look at the link. Science and maths have enhanced my life (and vocation) no end.

Hi, my name is Ronnie Moore. I work as an engineer in an aircraft factory and I work in the shrink fitting section. In school I got an O Level in Physics and one subject that has stayed with me was the Coefficient of Linear Expansion. A lot of my classmates guffawed as I remember, but I realised the importance right away. Basically, everything expands with heat (Universe included). Consider a jam jar that is stiff, heat it a little and it is easy peasy. You can take a part that is slightly to big (About 3 hundreds of a millimetre) dip it into liquid nitrogen and then it fits nicely into where it is supposed to go. When it thaws you have the perfect transition (Non budging) fit. It works perfectly with metals of course. So this and Geometry have stood me in good stead. I have just turned 50 by the way and i am going to retire this year, to concentrate on my lifelong hobby, Astronomy.

The basic principles behind geometry. I design and build prototype products and without those skills I doubt I could do the job.

Basic geometry, basic laws of physics, programming, basic chemistry and so on. You always need the basics for every day life and common knowledge. You use them everywhere, especially if you have a sciency job.
