Why are bees disappearing across America so fast?

Why are honey bees disappearing and did Einstein predict this?

  • I was reading about honey bees and read a quote by Einstein about the dangers of bees dying off and how if this ever happened that mankind wouldn't last another 4 years. Is this a myth or is there truth to this quote? Honey bees have been disappearing in mass numbers, but did Einstein really say anything about this? Here is the quote: “If we were ever to see the extinction of the honey bee, humankind would follow four years thereafter.” http://scienceray.com/biology/ecology/the-honey-bee-mystery/ http://www.heyokamagazine.com/HEYOKA.7.BEES.htm Thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts and knowledge.

  • Answer:

I have honeysuckle plants all around my house and whenever they bloom they are FULL of honey bees. I'm doing my part to keep them fed and alive. I think if everyone did that they might have a better chance to survive. And if they survive, WE Survive. Life is good. I AM Dartagnon I'll bet it might have something to do with our genetic engineering of crops and our over use of pesticides.

Hi there Kasey! {:>) Mankind is playing around with a genetic Russian roulette revolver.Monarch flutterby's have reacted with massive die offs after cruising to close to some genetically altered food crops. Have you seen what they are calling the BloB ? The plants that we have in salt water and fresh water tanks have been forced by man made chemical concoctions to make the plants survive easier. Now they have mutated and millions of people and Public aquariums dump in to the sewers and directly into the ocean these plants. Guess what....Now the mutated plants are strangling out all life and taking over at an alarming rate. The U.S. has tried to control it by ruining the ocean floor with a chemical that also kills everything. And many people worldwide will see a for sure and true worldwide food shortage! Peace and prosperity to ya there Kasey! .

Chemicals, radiation, global warming etc could be the reasons for the disappearance of honey bees. Plus of course, man's interference with the honey combs and filching of their precious stock of honey. Poor guys, they must have gone looking for greener pastures. But, there is no documented proof that Einstein made such a statement - http://www.snopes.com/quotes/einstein/bees.asp

Yes, it's true, bee's are dying as a direct result of genetically modified crops. They contain unknown proteins that is changing their dna, the same as it is changing human dna. Bee's pollinate our crops, if there are no bees there will be no crops. = Mass starvation. Practicing Shaman..quantum physics rocks.

Fascinating indeed. The only pure energy collectors apart from being pollinators, extinction of the species in unaffordble to humankind. They are the closest labourers for God. The quote “If we were ever to see the extinction of the honey bee, humankind would follow four years thereafter.” could prove true.

Einstein died in 1955, yet the quote doesn't go back farther than 1990... so, its REALLY doubtful. As to the bees, there are a NUMBER of reasons for hive collapse, many of which are our own damn fault. Please, just do some research, it is a fascinating subject. As to the meaning behind the bogus quote, even that makes no sense at all. Over the millions of years that insect life has been on the planet, the role of "pollinators" has been passed around many times. No reason why it couldn't be again.

my husband said that the bees came from Australia and contaminated our bees. I don't know. I saw a documentery were people in china were hand pollinating pear trees to sell the crops. Wow what a job that would be.

Here's my favorite answer!!! Are mobile phones wiping out our bees? Scientists claim radiation from handsets are to blame for mysterious 'colony collapse' of bees ~By Geoffrey Lean and Harriet Shawcross ~Sunday, 15 April 2007 http://www.ask.com/bar?q=bees+and+cell+phones&page=1&qsrc=0&ab=0&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.independent.co.uk%2Fenvironment%2Fnature%2Fare-mobile-phones-wiping-out-our-bees-444768.html It seems like the plot of a particularly far-fetched horror film. But some scientists suggest that our love of the mobile phone could cause massive food shortages, as the world's harvests fail. They are putting forward the theory that radiation given off by mobile phones and other hi-tech gadgets is a possible answer to one of the more bizarre mysteries ever to happen in the natural world - the abrupt disappearance of the bees that pollinate crops. Late last week, some bee-keepers claimed that the phenomenon - which started in the US, then spread to continental Europe - was beginning to hit Britain as well. The theory is that radiation from mobile phones interferes with bees' navigation systems, preventing the famously homeloving species from finding their way back to their hives. Improbable as it may seem, there is now evidence to back this up. Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) occurs when a hive's inhabitants suddenly disappear, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature workers, like so many apian Mary Celestes. The vanished bees are never found, but thought to die singly far from home. The parasites, wildlife and other bees that normally raid the honey and pollen left behind when a colony dies, refuse to go anywhere near the abandoned hives. The alarm was first sounded last autumn, but has now hit half of all American states. The West Coast is thought to have lost 60 per cent of its commercial bee population, with 70 per cent missing on the East Coast. CCD has since spread to Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. And last week John Chapple, one of London's biggest bee-keepers, announced that 23 of his 40 hives have been abruptly abandoned. Other apiarists have recorded losses in Scotland, Wales and north-west England, but the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs insisted: "There is absolutely no evidence of CCD in the UK." Many crops don't use bees - like corn. Also, honey bees aren't the only pollinators. Look at any flower garden. It is unlikely that Einstein said that. He died in 1955 and the quote didn't surface until 1994.
